AI-generated illustrative artwork.

The DJ world used to be entirely an all-boys school, a male-dominated society, but now it is no longer unusual to see women DJs thriving, whether professional or amateur.

Women DJs have been called female DJs, but recently there is even the term DJane.

Women’s achievements deserve attention in business, politics, and, of course, entertainment. That is because they bring a revitalizing energy that goes as far as innovation.

Catching up with the hottest DJanes right now means getting in touch with the real scene today.

So this time, I would like to pick out, with plenty of my own opinions, some recommended DJanes who combine popularity, talent, and beauty in 2019 and are at their hottest right now—absolutely not to be missed.

If you claim to love dance music, clubs, and festivals more than anyone else, this article is also a must-read.

Amelie Lens

Surely the first DJane who comes to everyone’s mind is the well-known techno queen, Amelie Lens.

At a statuesque 180 cm tall, Amelie has also worked as a fashion model. As a DJ, she was virtually unknown internationally around 2016, but began rising rapidly to prominence around 2017.

Today, she is not only a DJ and track producer but also a label owner (LENSKE) and an event organizer (EXHALE). She also performed in Japan in March 2019.

And with Tomorrowland finally coming up next month, it looks as though she will also appear on the main stage during Week 1 (July 19).

She has also become one of the signature headliners of Awakenings, the world’s biggest and most famous techno festival.

In addition, at ADE 2019, "EXHALE WITH AMELIE LENS AWAKENINGS ADE ELEMENTENSTRAAT" has been confirmed.

The hosts of AWAKENINGS at ADE have included Adam Beyer, Len Faki, Joris Voorn, Joseph Capriati, and others, so it seems that Amelie has now reached the same position as them.

The description the big sister of the techno world fits her perfectly, and I look forward to her continuing rise.

Charlotte de Witte is truly the DJane among DJanes. Her momentum only accelerates; it knows no bounds.

Like Amelie, she is from Belgium and is one of the leading techno queens, and she and Amelie have something of a rivalry.

Personally, I am not particularly fond of either her DJ sets or her tracks, and I do not have much attachment to her, but her slightly shadowy character, alluring atmosphere, and sets defined by a dark sound attract attention around the world, and she is probably one of the hardest DJs to book.

In 2018, she also performed on Tomorrowland’s main stage, standing out from the many other DJanes.

She made her first visit to Japan in September 2018, performing at Contact Tokyo right in the middle of Ultra Japan, packing it so tightly that people were starved of oxygen.

This year, I would love to see her come back to Resistance at Ultra Japan.

The term artist fits better than DJane when it comes to Peggy Gou.

Peggy, who is from South Korea and currently based in Germany, was also completely unknown until around 2015.

But she made her debut and rose through the ranks at the prestigious label owned by Radio Slave, rekids, soaring to stardom in the blink of an eye.

Released in spring 2019, the Nu Disco track “Starry Night” also reached the top of Beatport’s overall chart.

In 2018, she came to Japan for Fuji Rock Festival 2018, and in May 2019 she headlined the NEON GARDEN area at EDC JAPAN and appeared at its afterparty.

So she is probably a familiar figure to Japanese audiences, too.

And it seems that at this year’s Tomorrowland, she even appeared on the “ERIC PRYDZ PRESENTS HOLOSPHERE” stage.

Note: Amelie Lens, Maya Jane Coles, Charlotte de Witte—it seems she also got to hang out with these top names, haha.

There is no doubt she will be extremely busy from now on.

The phrase "peerless beauty" fits Nora En Pure, also known as Daniela Niederer, perfectly.

Originally from South Africa and now based in Zurich, Switzerland, her trademarks are beauty, sex appeal, and elegance.

Sometimes there are DJanes who get so excessively excited or hype up the crowd so much that I feel embarrassed just watching, but she is the polar opposite.

Her overwhelming presence and beauty, and a sound full of tropical warmth that suits her character so well, are captivating.

Her genre is Deep House, but her sound is distinctive in being neither too underground nor too commercial, with a certain catchy, bright quality.

At Miami Music Week in March 2019, she also held a party for her own label, Purified Records.

It seems Tomorrowland 2019 fell right on her birthday, so she brought her parents along (fourth image below).

She performed in Tokyo and Osaka on her visit to Japan in 2016. Let us wait for her to return to Japan at a festival of some kind next time.

ANNA

ANNA, who is from São Paulo, Brazil, and currently based in Barcelona, Spain, is wonderful, too. Personally, I think she is one of the hottest of those I have listed here.

ANNA’s father runs a club in São Paulo, and it seems she was playing there from the age of 14. I have included a video of her DJing entirely on vinyl.

Open source

Her 2018 release on the prestigious Kompakt label, “Hidden Beauties”, was selected as one of Mixmag’s best tracks of the year and held the number-one spot on Beatport’s techno chart for four months.

Open source

In Japan, she performed at Sound museum Vision in Shibuya in July 2015, and I believe she later played at either Air in Daikanyama or Sakeys Tokyo (both now closed), but it seems she has not returned to Japan since.

You can sense ANNA’s outstanding skills in both track production and DJing, and I would love to see her return to Japan at something like Resistance at Ultra Japan.

There Are Still Many More I Could Not Cover This Time!

Just a few others that come to mind are Chelina Manuhutu, La Fluer, Eli&Fur, Lauren Lane, and there are many DJanes around the world who combine talent and beauty.

I may cover them on another occasion, but if this article has sparked your interest, please look them up.

To be honest, I cannot hold out much hope for the future of Japan’s club scene, but their presence and achievements make me feel that the global scene still has a bright future.
