This year (2019), over three days on July 18, 19, and 20, Barcelona, Spain once again hosted Sónar Barcelona – Music, Creativity & Technology.
It seems to have once again provided a place to showcase cutting-edge music, art, and technology.
Top DJs once again delivered numerous wonderful gigs, mainly techno, and live videos already seem to be going online one after another.

As Usual, the 2020 Page Is Already Ready
European festivals announce the following year's event immediately after they finish, and Sónar is no exception.
The dates are already confirmed as July 18, 19, and 20, 2020.
From here, this is my prediction, heavily shaped by my personal views, but most long-running festivals probably already have their main performers confirmed at this point.
They have built trusting relationships with their performers, so the performers can feel that they will return, while audiences can expect a reliably strong lineup. That virtuous cycle probably lets them commit to the following year's event.
There is no longer any point in comparing this with Japan (going to Japanese festivals with the same casual mindset as attending a school festival is about right, haha; you cannot expect lineups as refined as Sónar's either). They do not put DJs (artists) first, and they are so poorly organized that they cannot even announce this year's lineup until the last minute.
This touches a little on business, but apparently Japanese companies expanding into Europe often casually postpone decisions in negotiations with local companies, leaving those companies exasperated.
I think whether people make immediate decisions on the important points is what creates the gap with the rest of the world over the long term.
