At ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event), now in full swing, David Guetta played under his alias Jack Back at an event hosted by Tech House king Mark Knight. The venue was the A’DAM observation deck.

David Guetta's Talent Is Off the Charts

Whether it was David Guetta the House DJ before EDM or David Guetta in his EDM days, I never particularly liked or disliked him.

I saw him as versatile, business-savvy, and good at spotting new talent (his support surely went a long way in making Afrojack, Nicky Romero, and Avicii stars), and he sometimes coasts, too.

He has never released a track I'd call my all-time favorite, so he could never be my number one, but his sense for “everything” in the dance music industry is world-class.

He is such a presence that it would be no exaggeration to say his genre is “David Guetta”. The same goes for Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren.

I don't follow Guetta's DJ sets or tracks very closely, but he is someone whose strategy and direction I can't help paying attention to.

Europe's Discerning Fans Embrace Jack Back

Speaking of David Guetta, Play Hard, Titanium, She Wolf, Hey Mama, and the like still enjoy fossil-like popularity in Japan on the floors of uncool-as-hell all-mix clubs in Roppongi, Ginza, and regional cities, but…

As the Tech House wave began to arrive, he stacked up releases under the Jack Back alias and steadily won support from trend-savvy audiences.

As you can see in the live video, the audience welcomes the shift from the EDM era to Tech House, and Guetta playing Tech House.

They don't seem to lock in their likes, dislikes, or views by genre the way Japanese audiences often do. They're far more flexible.

And on the global scene, commercial and underground players mix with each other as a matter of course.

David Guetta b2b Dubfire

While our music may be worlds apart, David Guetta and I share quite a history together, having met during my time as one-half of Deep Dish, and since, maintained a friendship and mutual respect for decades now. I was also thrilled when he agreed to sit for a candid interview in my Dubfire – Above Ground Level Film documentary which will finally see a release in November. David remains to this day a dear friend and so it was great to be invited by Pacha Magazine for their “Legends” series to catch up, reminisce and discuss the industry and our respective scenes.Read the full interview at #pachamagazine: http://bit.ly/GuettaDubfire

If You Say “David Guetta Is the Best!”, Listen to Jack Back Too

That's my real point.

The same applies to Tiesto and Armin, who have changed their styles quite clearly.

The Venue: The A’DAM Observation Deck

I will also share a video of the A’DAM observation deck that really makes you want to go.

I'd love to try the thrilling swing, too, though it might be rough for anyone afraid of heights.

Still Getting Hyped on 2010s Big Room House?

If that's you, here's a track just for you, lol.

[Intro] Yeah, y’all liked that shit, didn’t ya?
Well, I got news for y’all
I’m on some new shit [Verse 1] It had a good run, but it’s over now
It’s time y’all danced to a different sound
That nasty shit will make your ears bleed
You can never get enough of what you don’t need
In time, every genre tastes defeat
It’s the death of EDM, better drop a new beat
Yeah, it had a good run, but it’s over now
It’s time y’all danced to a different sound
EDM is dead
And I be killing it
Huh
And I be killing it
