The cold winter, when stepping outside was an ordeal, is over, and spring is here.
It kicks off with the carefree mood of cherry blossom viewing, and April brings a long holiday. Party season is truly underway.
So I'd like to pick out standout events in Tokyo in April 2019, “the last month of Heisei,” with plenty of personal opinion.
Saturday, April 6: Re:birth / MATHEW JONSON – Live – @VENT
MATHEW JONSON's sound is undeniably cool, artistic, and sometimes avant-garde.
If you love Techno but don't know MATHEW JONSON well, or have never seen him play, you'll be missing out if you don't catch him this time, lol.
Friday, April 12: ALIVE feat. NASTIA (Ukraine) @Sound Museum Vision Tokyo
After playing in Japan at ULTRA JAPAN 2018 (Resistance stage) and its afterparty at WOMB, Ukrainian female techno DJ NASTIA is playing Sound Museum Vision Tokyo.
Saturday, April 13: “NEW DAWN BREAKING” JAPAN NIGHTLIFE MEDIA [NOCTIVE] LAUNCH PARTY @ ageHa
Techno and Tech House legend LUCIANO descends on ageHa for the first time in a while.
What's more, the Arena has DJ SODEYAMA and SATOSHI OTSUKI, so if you stay in the Arena, you can enjoy top-quality Techno and Tech House from start to finish.
Saturday, April 20: Simple Symmetry at Huit Etoiles 5th Anniversary @VENT
A Japan visit by an act that seems to be becoming a key figure in the Nu Disco scene: Simple Symmetry.
It isn't well known in Japan, but Nu Disco is a hugely popular genre in Europe. In fact, when I went to ADE 2017, I stopped by Rush Hour, which had an extensive Nu Disco selection, and events such as Into the Woods are very popular too.
Huit Etoiles, by the way, is one of the few parties in Japan dedicated to Nu Disco.
Saturday, April 26: Akufen @ VENT
The brilliant Tech House and Deep House DJ Akufen.
Like Steve Bug and Jeff Milligan, he plays Deep Tech House: grown-up music that works in any era, any place, and any situation, the polar opposite of pointlessly hyped-up sounds.
He's my number-one pick. Even better if it's a long set!
